UNDERSTAND AND LEARN ABOUT ADDICTIONS:
YOUR TRUSTED SOURCE OF INFORMATION

For a Future Free from Addictions:

Learn, Understand, and Act

The list can be endless, but we want to summarize the most important signs to watch for:

  • Apathy – Anhedonia – Abulia: The person shows a lack of interest in anything that isn’t related to obtaining what’s necessary for their substance use.
  • Changes in Personal Care Habits: Neglect and/or lack of attention to healthy routines; disruptions in sleep cycles, eating habits, and/or physical exercise.
  • Financial Problems: Increased financial needs due to the expenses associated with the addictive habit.
  • Changes in Social Relationships: The person may show a tendency towards isolation, changes in friendships, abandonment of previous emotional connections, and detachment from family.
  • Failure to Meet Responsibilities: Disengagement from previously important responsibilities; everything becomes indifferent to the person.
  • Outpatient Treatment: Also known as professional counseling (by a psychologist and/or psychiatrist specializing in addictions). This treatment is typically conducted once a week over a period of 6 to 12 months.

  • Intensive Outpatient Treatment: A series of therapeutic activities that include individual sessions, group therapy for addictions, skills workshops, family sessions and workshops, and toxicology controls; the duration is approximately 12 months.

  • Detoxification Treatment: A brief 3-month internment where the individual achieves substance abstinence, regulation of associated pathologies, and begins a long-term outpatient therapeutic process.

  • Residential Treatment: A comprehensive addiction rehabilitation program that includes counseling, recovery training, medical and mental health treatment, and medication management (as needed), with an average duration of 12 to 18 months.

To ensure the safety of our users, staff, and the effectiveness of the treatment, it is essential to have a thorough understanding of each case. We are fully aware of our therapeutic capabilities and limitations, as well as the importance of patient care. Therefore, we require applicants to schedule an Admission Appointment.

Here are some general aspects that can guide us in the prevention of addictions:

  • Delay the Age of First Use: Especially for alcohol, as the highest risk period is during adolescence.
  • Teach and Practice Refusal Skills: Help individuals learn how to decline invitations to use drugs.
  • Discuss the Risks of Substance Use: Clearly communicate that drug use is unnecessary for the body and leads to harmful consequences.
  • Be a Role Model: Most importantly, demonstrate the behaviors and attitudes that support the above recommendations.
  • Encourage Pleasurable Activities: Promote engagement in sports, outdoor activities, hobbies, and other pursuits to create behavioral patterns that are incompatible with addiction (such as discipline, tolerance to discomfort, good self-organization, emotional self-control, etc.).

It’s common for patients to initially resist treatment. Through family counseling on addiction, the family must make the necessary changes to encourage the individual to join the program. In such situations, we offer participation in a Family Intervention Program, which aims to help the individual agree to treatment.

Family members and loved ones need to understand that they cannot cure, control, or be blamed for the problematic substance use. Their role is to encourage and ensure that the individual attends and engages in treatment.

The stages of the process are as follows:

  • Case Evaluation Appointments: To determine which type of treatment is most suitable.
  • Visit to Our Internment Facility: If the case warrants it.
  • Assessment of Administrative Feasibility: This includes evaluating bed availability, financial aspects, contracts, and other considerations.
  • Therapeutic Recommendations: Once the evaluation phase is complete, we offer therapeutic recommendations, both within our program and at other levels of care.

Principles of Addiction Treatment

The first step is to understand the illness

QUESTIONS ABOUT REHABILITATION CENTER
KNOW TO DECIDE

Restore Family Well-Being

A rehabilitation center is a residential therapeutic space (Internment) focused on the social reintegration of the individual. It employs various methodologies, strategies, and techniques that may vary depending on the facility. At Opción de Vida, we use the therapeutic community model for addiction treatment, applying the principles of learning and behavior modification, as well as mutual aid groups.

Completing a Treatment Program significantly improves the effectiveness of the intervention. The average duration is 12 to 14 months, during which time detoxification, habit-breaking, and the creation of habits that reinforce a new lifestyle are achieved.

The desire to intern a family member who is addicted is often frequent but temporary. Many families «search and desist,» taking action much later, usually during a crisis. Once the crisis subsides, the interest in treatment often fades. Some families make decisions in the midst of a crisis without considering important aspects that ensure the treatment’s effectiveness, with the sole aim of «solving the crisis or punishing.»

Deciding to intern a person should be a process similar to purchasing a valuable asset. You need to research, gather information, check references, look at success stories, and consider the quality-cost relationship.

The best way to help someone who is struggling with addiction, especially when there is a familial, emotional, or other interdependent relationship, is to start by examining how we are contributing to their addiction. We may have adopted a co-addiction role that reinforces the addiction, and most of our actions may actually sustain the addictive behavior. There are both active and passive ways of contributing to addiction. Once we have observed and recognized our co-addiction role, the next step is to seek help for ourselves and begin a plan to help the addict.

The family plays a crucial role in this decision. The individual must be informed that the family is actively seeking and has decided on a treatment plan, and that this is a consequence of their addictive behavior. It is also important to convey that the individual will receive family support throughout the process, as everyone has been affected by the situation.

The treatment program at any rehabilitation center is finite, meaning it has a beginning and an end. However, addiction is a permanent condition, so it is essential for the individual to continue their follow-up process through an external reintegration program or by joining mutual aid groups (AA, NA).

The cost of internment varies widely. To estimate a reasonable cost for the service provided, it’s important to consider basic aspects such as daily meals and the room used. Additionally, the quality of therapy received, including the presence of nurses, psychologists, general practitioners, psychiatrists, physical therapists, and other professionals, should be taken into account. Another factor is the intensity and dedication required for each individual, which is related to the balance between professional capacity and the number of people being treated.

Treating the addiction is always more cost-effective than maintaining the problem. Without treatment, the individual still requires food, shelter, and other expenses resulting from the consequences of addiction, such as consumption costs, vehicular accidents, and medical care. Therefore, investing in treatment is the more economical choice.

The effectiveness of treatments largely depends on a few key factors. Completing the treatment program is a critical factor in increasing its effectiveness. The most effective treatments are those that combine a variety of strategies and therapeutic techniques that support the treatment. Therefore, the most effective treatments are those that ensure program completion and integrate validated methodologies for addiction treatment.

The will of a person in a state of addiction can be very changeable. There are moments of openness and decision-making about treatment, as well as moments of resistance. It’s important for family members to be prepared and attentive to these changes to help at the right moment. It is also crucial to foster an environment of change and understanding of the addictive disease, avoiding blame or personalizing the issue. Addiction is a family problem in both origin and solution.
