A family living in the United States can begin without traveling to Peru first. We can start with a virtual family evaluation to understand what is happening and whether our outpatient program may be appropriate.
If the parents are in the U.S. and the teen is already in Peru, we can also begin virtually with the family and coordinate the teen’s evaluation in Lima.
What we review
- Substance use pattern and current situation.
- Current risks.
- Family circumstances and home environment.
- Previous treatment, when relevant.
- Current medication and prior reports, when available.
What we define next
- Whether our outpatient program may fit the case.
- How care can be organized if the teen is or will be in Peru.
- How the family can participate.
- What other level of care to consider if outpatient treatment is not appropriate.
Important Information You Should Know

What if the teen is already in Peru?
If the teen is already in Peru, we can coordinate an evaluation to understand the situation and determine whether our outpatient program may be appropriate. In-person outpatient care is coordinated in San Borja, Lima.
If the parents or caregivers remain in the United States, they can begin family orientation virtually.
Does Opción de Vida provide inpatient rehab for teens under 18?

How can a U.S. family get started?
The first step can be a virtual family evaluation. We review the substance use situation, current risks, and family circumstances. From there, we explain whether our outpatient program may be appropriate and what the next step would be.

No. The family can receive orientation before traveling. If you are in the United States, we can begin with a virtual family evaluation and review the case before deciding on next steps.
Travel or immigration requirements should be verified separately through current official sources.
What do you review during the initial evaluation?
We review the teen’s substance use pattern, current risks, and family circumstances. When relevant, we can also consider previous treatment and current medication to better understand the case.
How can the family participate from the United States?
Family participation is part of the treatment process. When parents or caregivers are in the United States, we can begin with virtual orientation and evaluation to understand what is happening and define how the family can take part.
What if outpatient treatment is not enough?
If our evaluation indicates that outpatient treatment does not provide the level of care the teen needs, we explain that to the family and guide them toward another type of care to consider.
MEET OUR TEAM, REAL PEOPLE, REAL CARE
Outpatient treatment is organized according to what we find during the evaluation. The teen continues living at home or in their usual environment and attends scheduled sessions; they do not live at our residential facility.
Treatment may address substance use, behavior, emotional regulation, routines, risk situations, and relapse prevention, with family participation. The frequency and structure of care are defined according to the individual case.
